It is believed that tailgating started in the late 1800s when the first college football games were played. But today it's not for football anymore. Tailgating has caught on at most sporting events and even concerts. Chef Jason Hill visits the 2009 Rose Bowl to get some tailgating recipes and some tips from these pros. Before the game, the Rose Bowl parking lot was transformed into an awesome tailgate party, where football fans were busy playing tailgating games and grilling up some great tailgating food. On the hunt for tailgating ideas, I found that the most essential equipment is a portable tailgate grill, table and canopy. A big screen TV, generator and rocking stereo system is also a plus. At this USC college tailgate, burgers, steak and carne asada rule, but we also find some bacon-wrapped hot dogs in the mix, cooked up with some grilled onions and peppers on a foil-wrapped sheet pan. Of course, with this great party vibe we met plenty of generous fans who were willing to offer us a bite and share some great football tailgating tips. One group was making carne asada tacos on a street taco grill. They use it for all sorts of tailgating recipes, from chorizo and egg burritos for breakfast to carne asada. They also fill it with oil to make fried chicken or fish. The secret to this great carne asada recipe was a steak marinade made from Sunny Delight, Lawry's seasoning salt, onions, cilantro and fresh orange slices. The key is to let it sit. You can't just mix it up and cook it right away. Let it marinate overnight. Most of these die-hard fans arrive 4-5 hours early to get their spots on the lawn. Our final stop brought us to a fun couple who were cooking up some delicious rib-eye steaks, hot Italian sausage, and pork chops. This couple said the best barbecuing is done with wood, and they prefer grape wood. Here are some tailgating tips I learned from the game: • Keep it simple • Marinate your meat the day before. • Arrive at the event 5 hours early to set up and get a spot. • Use grape wood for the best flavor • Use disposable containers • Pack napkins and utensils the day before • Bring lots of ice and bottled water • Make a check list of cooking items My favorite tailgating recipe is a beef tri tip recipe, which I marinate the day before in a Ziplock bag filled with olive oil and spices. When you're ready for the game, just throw the tri tip steak in the ice chest with your supplies and you're good to go. For the tri tip marinade, combine 1/4 cup brown sugar, 2 teaspoons black pepper, 2 teaspoons paprika, 1 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 2 teaspoons chili powder, 1 tablespoon of salt. Now, in a Ziploc bag, place 5 pounds of tri tip beef with about 1/4 cup olive oil and 1 tablespoon garlic-shallot puree. Add your seasoning mix and shake to combine. Place in the refrigerator overnight until you're ready to leave. This will feed about 10 of your hungriest friends, and you can easily double this recipe to serve more. For this bbq tri tip, you're going to grill this over indirect heat until it's done, about 8-10 minutes on each side. Cooking tri tip can take around 30 minutes, depending on the temperature of your grill. For a smoky flavor, try adding some of that grape wood to your grill. This recipe is great sliced and eaten on its own, or put into sandwich rolls topped with grilled onions, peppers and a horseradish sauce. You can make your own horseradish sauce by mixing some horseradish paste with sour cream or mayonnaise to your taste. Serve this tri tip with my grilled corn on the cob video recipe. I hope you enjoy it !

College Football Week 1: Pro Handicappers discuss betting strategies for week 1 and week 2
http://www.sbrforum.com - A brand new season of college football begins tonight and what better way to get things rolling that with some capping input from SBR's Peter Loshak and Justin7. Week 1 in college football is known for being both a heady and treacherous time for bettors and books alike. All the unknowns that each new college season brings have bettors searching for mispriced lines while also guarding against overreacting to possibly incomplete information, and sportsbooks guarding against taking a beating from sharps while simultaneously enjoying the flood of action. There are various approaches to handicapping and betting Week 1 of college football, most with some merit. Some cappers narrow their focus to a limited number of teams, looking to gain an edge through early and thorough research. Others follow general rules of thumb such as fading ranked teams or teams starting young QBs, or betting on teams with key returning starters, a new coach, or experienced offensive and/or defensive lines. Still others lay off of Week 1 completely. Whatever the approach, its clear that capping the early weeks of the season is a different animal from capping the rest of the season, and that both great betting opportunities and dangerous traps abound in Week 1. SBRs own Justin7, a widely acknowledged college football handicapping expert who uses a quantitative approach to line valuation, discusses these issues with SBR.tvs Peter Loshak. 2009 College Football Week 7: Free picks and game previews for betting Week 7 in NCAA Football
http://www.sbrforum.com - Justin7 wasnt available for a live conversation with Peter Loshak for Week 7 in college football, but he still provided opinions on numerous betting lines for upcoming games. Loshak also used several posts by SBRForum.com posters to summarize the key factors involved in big games this weekend. Failure to score TDs in the red zone is a problem that afflicts teams at all levels, and sometimes it is a result of variance, other time a result of something more fundamental. Two Top 25 teams that had red zone problems last week, No. 2 Alabama and No. 20 Oklahoma, illustrate this point, with things looking more promising in this area for the Crimson Tide than for the Sooners due to an important statistical indicator. Oklahoma has gone from being the top TD-converting red zone team in the country in 2008 to having problems in the red zone week-in and week-out in 2009, and the change is largely due to personnel changes on the offensive line. Last year the Sooners featured an imposing OL laden with seniors, and this year the absence of those seniors has brought the Sooners rushing game back down to earth. They will face a stiff challenge this week against No. 3 Texas, one of the top run defenses in the country. Sharp money has come in on Texas already at -3, and Justin7 puts the fair line at -6. No. 6 USC is a 10-point road favorite at No. 25 Notre Dame, but the talent disparity between the two teams is less stark this year than it has been in recent matchups. USC features their usual awesome D, but this year Notre Dame will be able to counter with a quality offense led by QB Jimmy Claussen which should be able to give them a fighting chance. Sharp money has come in on the Fighting Irish at +10.5, while the lively discussions on SBRForum.com seem split on this one. Despite Notre Dame fielding a live offense and getting double digits at home, many are still skittish about betting against USC. Supporting that is Justin7s computer line of USC -12.5. Wisconsin lost decisively to No. 7 Ohio St last week, but with the Buckeyes getting 2 defensive TDs and a kickoff return TD, the final score may be illusory. The Badgers played Ohio St competitively, and now come home to face undefeated but possibly overrated No. 11 Iowa as a small favorite. The line had early movement in favor of Wisconsin , and Loshak liked them a lot at -1.5, and still likes them at their current line of -2.5, bolstered by Justin7s computer line of -5. No. 4 Virginia Techs road showdown at No. 19 Georgia Tech may be a defining game for the Hokies, as they will face a stiff test trying to stop the Yellow Jackets vaunted triple-option offense. But VT has played impressively against quality competition so far this year, and if they pull out a win here, they will be in great position for a 1-loss regular season, and may prove that they really do belong in the Top 5 this year. Justin7 sets this line exactly where the market has it, Virginia Tech -3, while two of SBRs best-known college football handicappers, Pags11 and Pavyracer, are at odds on this one, with Pags11 posting a play of GT +3, and Pavyracer on VT -2.5. 2009 College Football Week 6: Free picks and game previews for betting Week 6 in NCAA Football
http://www.sbrforum.com - SBR moderator Justin7 is graciously sharing with Peter Loshak and SBR his stat models recommended plays in college football, and he got off to a great start in Week 5 last week, going 3-0. Loshak and Justin discussed various upcoming Week 6 Top 25 games of interest. Florida State is having a very unpredictable year, sometimes looking great as they did in their road win at BYU, but more often looking undisciplined as they have in various losses and sluggish recent performances. Justin7s stat model reflects that, as it does indicate a preference for #22 Georgia Tech at +2.5, but with too much volatility involved to justify a bet. It does agree with Loshaks lean to the over 54.5. There are two home dogs that caught Loshaks eye, with the lines possibly reflecting overreactions to the unexpected early-season success of the respective road faves involved. #24 Missouri is a 3-point home dog to #21 Nebraska. Nebraska has been winning and putting up good defensive numbers, but Justin points out that Nebraskas success has come against a very weak slate of opponents. Unranked Arkansas is also a 3-point home dog to #17 Auburn, a surprising team that is generating a lot of buzz right now. Air Force may have big trouble putting up points against #10 TCUs elite defense, while #2 Texas, at home off of a bye week facing Colorados weak D, has a big offensive day looming, and team totals may be the way to go in those games. #12 Iowa is looking solid, while Michigan is looking vulnerable, but Iowa doesnt quite inspire blowout confidence, and as an 8-point favorite, a tease might be called for, even though teasers are generally less recommended in college than in the NFL. A similar situation might be present in the marquee game of the week, #1 Florida at #4 LSU. Justins computer model spit out only one pick this week, which he reveals to Loshak at the end of their chat. 2009 College Football Week 8: Free picks and game previews for betting Week 8 in NCAA Football
http://www.sbrforum.com - Justin7 returns in person to join SBR.tvs Peter Loshak in discussing Week 8 in college football, informed as always by his college football stat model. The Oklahoma/Kansas game attracted a ton of early split action, causing the line to bounce back and forth, repeatedly moving on and off the key number of 7 in the early going. Loshak is thinking No. 24 Kansas might have value as a good-sized home dog, and is encouraged by Justin7s agreement as well as reports of some sharp action on the Jayhawks. No. 2 Florida was bounced from the top spot in the rankings this week, not due to a loss, but due to less-than-dominant performances on the field recently. Nevertheless, the oddsmakers installed the Gators as a 3+ TD road favorite against Mississippi St., and the market pushed that line up even higher. The Bulldogs may not be an elite squad, but they have kept reasonably close to other ranked teams when at home, and Loshak and Justin7 discuss this huge line, agreeing that it is probably a bit too high. Undefeated No. 7 Iowa rolls into Michigan St. looking to keep their surprising season going, and there has been a lot of debate concerning just how good the Hawkeyes really are. With a strong defense and a physical but not flashy offense, the betting market has been resistant to back them, and this week again the line has moved against them. Justin7s model, however, rates Michigan St as a solid favorite in this intriguing handicapping situation. No. 9 LSU is off of a bye week, regrouping after their first loss of the season to Florida. LSU has issues on offense that were particularly exposed by the Gators, and they were reportedly working on fixing some of those problems with their break. Auburn might be a good team to come back against, as the Tigers have struggled recently, most notably losing at home to Kentucky last week. But with the line at LSU -7.5, Loshak and Justin7 are split on which side might be the one with value. Justin7 reveals one other side he likes this week, and Loshak reports on a side he has heard Billy Walters is on, as well as a side he has heard a sharp syndicate is on.
