Football Stallions of DeSales High School win a Division III state semifinal, Nov. 27, 2009.
A slow start didn't stop the DeSales football team from getting back to a place it hasn't been since 2005.
The Stallions (11-3) led only 3-0 in its Division III state semifinal contest at Dayton Welcome Stadium Friday, Nov. 27, but the defense patiently waited for the offense to catch up and they won 24-7.
DeSales scored on its first drive on a 21-yard field goal by David Harper.
Adam Griffin got things going offensively when he scampered 67 yards to set up a 1-yard scoring run by quarterback Nick Gentile.
Gentile added another 1-yard run for a score with 11:22 to play in the fourth quarter, and Warren Ball answered the Cowboys' only score of the night with a 6-yard TD run with 7:43 to play to close out the scoring.
Chris Rock recorded three sacks and knocked down a pass on defense, and Mitch Herbert and Mitch Yinger each intercepted passes.
Gentile led the way with 143 yards rushing on 25 carries, while Griffin totaled 105 yards on the ground on just 11 runs.
The Stallions are to play Youngstown Cardinal Mooney in the D-III state championship game at Massillon Washington Friday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m.
Mooney hosted DeSales in Week 2, and won 21-14.
